Q: What parts do I need to remove from the subaru donor vehicle? A: Here's a listing but bear in mind that the list may change with engine year/model. I've provided numbers with most of the parts (if they are visible in the engine bay) to show you where to find them on the provided picture. "n/a" means that they cannot be seen in the picture. INSERT PICTURE OF donor engine here... ENGINE: 05 cruise control diaphragm (servo actuator) (optional) 05 cruise control cable (optional) 06 a/c hose - lo pressure in (optional) 08 throttle cable 09 a/c hose - hi pressure out (optional) 10 AC compressor (optional) 11 alternator 12 power steering pump 13 engine cover (optional) 14 power steering hoses - cut them off someplace that will allow you to stop the flow of leaking fluid. n/a Motor Mounts and nuts AIR INTAKE SYSTEM 02 Air cleaner box (or aftermarket cleaner) 02 Air intake ducting Note: Get the complete black plastic air intake system and all hoses attached from the engine throttle all the way to the air cleaner box. The critical air flow meter is mounted just behind the air cleaner box. INSERT PICTURE of removed engine wiring harness here. WIRING HARNESS 03 Atmospheric Pressure Sensor (Boost Sensor) - late 90's engines 03 Pressure Sources Sensor Valve - late 90's engines 04 Ignitor: 2" square black item mounted to the fire wall. n/a Fuel Pump Relay (a green cube shaped relay, about an inch square....mounted inside the car.) n/a Ignition Relay (a brown cube shaped relay, about an inch square....mounted inside the car, right next to the fuel relay. Both of these relays are mounted on a metal bracket) n/a Get the bracket that the fuel and ignition relays clip into. It could be useful later when you mount them in the van. n/a 3 Large Grey plugs on the right side of the engine....these are the major connections between the engine harness and the rest of the harness and ECU. n/a ECU n/a OBD Interface Plug (usually located on the lower part of the dashboard - toward the driver door from the steering column) n/a O2 Sensor(s) - these are screwed into the exhaust pipes n/a All the wiring from the ECU, ignition and fuel relays, (which are mounted inside the car in the drivers footwell) to the engine. Stuff needed for engine removal: *Masking tape (labeling and sealing things like intake, and vac. hoses) and a sharpie *Ziplock bags to keep associated fasteners together and labeled *Metric socket (short, long and extensions I used 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" sets) and OE wrench set, 10mm-->15mm were the most common *14mm hex if you want to open the coolant drain plugs *Breaker bar *Tin snips *I have an old pair of Felco #7 pruning snips that are great for cutting wire *Rubber mallet and eye protection *5 Gallon bucket (coolant, oil and brake fluid) *jack and stands *flashlight or trouble light *have a container handy and save all the misc nuts, bolts, hoses and hose clamps that you remove. They might come in handy later. ________________________________________________________________________ NOTES ON SUBARU ENGINE REMOVAL... 1) I often have difficulty separating the engine from the tranny when it is still in the vehicle. Lately I have just been pulling the whole thing then separate them when they are on the ground - much easier. The only problem is you do need access to the underside - jack and stands. If it is an automatic there is the problem of disconnecting the torque converter. NOTES ON SUBARU HARNESS REMOVAL... 1) There are two main sections, half of it in the engine bay itself and the other half inside the car. Major runs between the two run inside the driver's side fender which must be removed to get at the wiring. General ruled is DON'T CUT ANYTHING! If you have everything, it will become clear later what falls away as unnecessary. If you MUST BE ADVENTUROUS AND YOU THINK YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE CUTTING, you don't need the auto transmission control unit or the Subaru cruise control computer. You can cut the wiring runs to the exterior lights if you're sure you know which ones they are and take everything else. It will be a BIG HARNESS. There are two main sections (inside the car and in the engine bay) joined together by a big rectangular grey plug. Most of the harness will be waste and will be stripped away later. 2) No special tools for getting wiring harness out 8, 10, 12 and 14 mm socket and wrenches - philips screw divers and wire cutters. 3) Remove steering wheel - in order to get at dash. Remove all screws holding dash and lift it out complete after disconnecting all connectors, heater controls and speedo. 4) Remove grommets around A/C and heater pipes then remove nuts holding heater fan, A/C evaporator and heater core. Remove fan first then the A/C evaporator will nearly fall in your lap finally remove heater core. 5) In order to remove the wiring harness from the subaru car, you'll need to first remove the driver's side front fender. 6) When it comes to removing the harness - I split the large connector under the dash on the driver's side. In this way you can remove the driverside harness first by feeding the large connector from the driver side out through the fender well - then feed the other half of the harness through the grommet hole in the middle of the fire wall - feed it from the engine bay into the passenger compartment.
