With my last converted van, I went with a triple gauge pod which was mounted under the radio. I've also had vehicles that had gauges over by the radio or dash area. The only complaint that I have with that location is that it diverts the driver's attention long enough to cause a potential safety issue. Unless they are digital "at a glance" gauges. I actually liked the idea of digital and found affordable gauges through cyberdyne and summit. But, I wanted to go with something that matches my updated vw dash gauge faces which are white w/ black lettering and orange needles. I am really glad I did. The lighting on the phantoms is very nice. It's not distracting and matches the lighting in the dash very well. And best of all, positioning on the a pillar does not block my view and affords a good look at the gauge without losing sight of the road. I'd not do it any other way. Brent The gauges are Autometer Phantoms but the mounting choices I made would work for any 2 1/16" gauge. I purchased everything on egauges.com Here's the link to the mounting kit I purchased: http://egauges.com/vdo_acce.asp?Subgroup=Campro_Cup&Cart=1 I went with the #1 option which uses a small mounting pivot with a hidden screw. Routed the wires to/from the gauges inside a black sheath down to the dash right alongside the window rubber. It blends in nicely and saved me from drilling another hole in the A Pillar. My only suggestion when mounting these is to spend a bit of time positioning them so that you only have to drill once. I'm very happy with the visibility and safety factor of not having to take my eyes off the road to view them. PLANNING GAUGES You're right. egauges has like a billion choices. It's confusing and takes much more time than it should to figure out. You want to think of these gauges you're installing as completely separate entities from what is in the vw dash. You're best off to install a dedicated sender for each of your oil pressure and water temp gauges. The standard sending unit for aftermarket gauges is 1/8" NPT (national pipe thread). So, wherever you screw in the sender has to have it's threads tapped to that size. Because the 1/8" npt is so close to the metric equivalent size of the sending units used on the stock subaru, it's not difficult at all to drill and tap the subaru sender ports to accept the slightly larger 1/8" npt sender. But it does mean that you'll have to do some driling and threading so either get friendly with someone who has the correct size drill and the correct size tap or purchase them yourself. With the oil sender you can use an existing oil galley which is located back on the engine very close to the IAC (left rear top of engine). You'll see what looks like a plug back there with an allen head. I usually remove the plug, drill and tap it, and reinstall it to screw the sender in. One note, because the aftermarket oil pressure senders are usually quite large, I swap places with the stock subaru oil pressure sender unit. That is, I move the dash oil pressure sender back to the rear oil port and the aftermarket one moves to the front port just under the alternator. It's very cramped in there and you have to use a 45 degree brass street elbow fitting (1/8" npt) to redirect the sender so that it will miss the alternator bracket and intake manifold. Ive got a lot of pictures of this on my site in the electric section (I think). As to the water temp sender, it's pretty easy just to tap out one of the available spots on the coolant manifold. The thing to remember with your gauge choice is that you'll have to mount them somewhere. You might want to stick with 2 1/16" diameter gauges because there're more options for mounting with that size. When you're mounting, remember that you'll need the sender wire from the engine, a ground wire, and an ignition (12Volt +) wire to power the gauge. You will also need a line in from your dash lighting (tap in to your existing lighting so that your rheostat dims/brightens the gauges with your dash, great for those romantic cruises.) All of that said, here's the choices on egauges if you're sticking with autometer phantoms. If youre not yet tied to a brand, just do youself a favor and limit your search to 2 1/16, electric gauges which come with senders. It'll make your life much easier by limiting choices.
